• Two Buttons suits and three buttons suits are classic. 2 buttons suit are appropriate for business people.

• One button suit and more than three button suits are suitable for social events than two button suit.

• In two button jacket fasten only top button.

• You can close middle button or top and middle button in three button jacket.

• In men’s suits where lapels roll to the middle button, leave top button unfastened in such suits.

• In four or more button jacket fasten all the buttons. You can leave bottom button open.

• In the earlier time when waistcoats were very long, the tradition of not buttoning the bottom button may have come from that.

• Double breasted suits can have four to six buttons with one or two button suit styles such as 4/2, 4/1 and 6/2, it looks more formal.The first number gives the total number of front buttons and the second is the number of functioning buttonholes.  It doesn’t always mean that all the buttons have to be fastened.

• Primarily in navy uniforms, Double breasted suits are of 6 to 8 buttons with all buttons designed to fasten. If you have a double breasted jacket with two buttons you can close top button or close lower button for different style. This style presents a longer line to the front of the jacket giving you a long, lean look.

• It is not advisable to always close the Double Breasted jacket. If you unbutton your jacket the fabric bulks up around your middle.

• Dark color suits are more appropriate for business and social occasions. The popular choice for colors among business people for suits are navy blue, gray, black, charcoal gray, olive etc.
